Abbey Road Terrace

Heritage Day in Alberta was designated in1974 by the Government of Alberta to commemorate the cultural and historic heritage of the province. Heritage Day is celebrated on the first Monday of August which this year will be Monday, August 7, 2023.

Green Acres Foundation has proudly been an important part of the Southern Alberta community since 1960. Since then, the Foundation has provided affordable homes and care services for senior citizens in the area. The Foundation’s newest apartment building, Abbey Road Terrace, was originally constructed in 1949, as St. Aloysius Convent. It has officially been recognized as a historic building by the City of Lethbridge.

History of Abbey Road Terrace

“In December 1890, five Sisters of the Order of the Faithful Companions of Jesus arrived in Lethbridge to live and teach at St. Aloysius Convent School, located at 2 Avenue and 9 Street South. The school opened on January 12, 1891 to 57 eager students.

In September 1949, the nuns moved to this two-storey brick convent. The convent was constructed by Oland Construction at a cost of $45,000.

The nuns remained here until late 1980s. The building then served a few uses, including a daycare.

In July 2021, the building was purchased by Green Acres Foundation, a seniors housing organization established in 1960. The building was converted into self-contained apartments for seniors. To honour the history of the convent and as a whimsical reference to the Beatles, the building has been renamed to Abbey Road Terrace. The historic look of the exterior of the convent has been maintained.”

A Fresh Start

Even though Abbey Road Terrace was built 74 years ago, residents feel that they are living in a beautiful new building.

“As soon as I saw the building I fell in love with it.” Doreen, a resident at Abbey Road Terrace, is happy with her decision to move into the building. “It’s a fresh start. I just retired, sold my house and get to move into this brand new place. It’s a real gift. It feels like home!”

Green Acres Foundation has honoured the historical significance of St. Aloysius by maintaining the charming character of the original convent. This historical building will now be enjoyed for many generations to come and continue to serve as a part of Lethbridge and Southern Alberta’s rich history.
