Ruth’s 102 Birthday

Our resident Ruth, celebrated her 102nd birthday on Friday, March 24, 2023 at her lodge. You may recognize Ruth as our social media star. She gets into all kinds of escapades with her best friend and fellow lodge resident, Trudy, who celebrated her 100th birthday in December. Check out “Ruth’s social media highlights” video here.

Although Ruth is humble and does not like being the centre of attention, it’s not every day that a resident turns 102! Along with the lodge residents in attendance were her daughter, Judy and granddaughter, Joanne. Dawna Coslovi, Green Acres Foundation CEO, Chief Mehdizadeh from the Lethbridge Police Service, and Ryan Parker the Deputy Mayor for the City of Lethbridge also paid a visit to congratulate the centenarian.

Ruth is well-known for having a great sense of humour and for keeping everyone on their toes. She has an infectious zest for life and loves to make people smile. A perfect example is while she was walking with other lodge residents around Henderson Lake last fall, she made friends with a goat named Boots. Watch the video here.

“I just want to be active and keep active. It feels so much better when I get out for a walk. I go for walks around the block to get fresh air.” Ruth’s advice is to keep active, and she loves to take part in activities in the lodge “I’m looking forward to the summer. The lodge has all these activities that we can go on and I just love it. I’m on the go, they can’t keep me in here!” she said with a mischievous laugh.

Along with camping, gardening, and baking, one of Ruth’s biggest passions is fishing. “I’ve got some medals hanging on the wall from when Lesley (lodge activity coordinator) took us to Pincher Creek for a fishing derby and I got a medal because I was the oldest one to fish. I’ll try anything!”

Ruth’s daughter Judy reminisced, “one time she was fishing and she threw her line out and a pelican came down, swooped up her line and then there she was, having this tug of war with a pelican! Of course, she was so stubborn no one – not even a pelican – was going to get that away from her! She did win by the way.”

Her granddaughter Joanne added, “even when I was growing up, she was never sitting still, she was always doing something. I don’t think she ever just sat down and didn’t do something.”

Ruth has a big family including five children, nine grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. The family had their own celebration on Saturday, March 25, 2023 to honour Ruth’s 102nd birthday.

We can’t wait to see what adventures Ruth will undergo this year!
