Seniors’ Week

Celebrating Our Seniors!

Each year, the first week of June is dedicated to celebrating one of Alberta’s greatest treasures – our senior citizens. Seniors’ Week is a time to recognize and honour the many contributions older adults have made in shaping our communities. Since 1986, the province has officially recognized this special week, with communities across Alberta hosting events, activities, concerts, and more to show their appreciation for seniors.

Why It Matters

Seniors’ Week reminds us of the importance of appreciation and connection. It's a time to thank those who came before us, to listen more closely, and to create opportunities for seniors to feel seen, heard, and valued. It’s also a reminder to continue advocating for age-friendly communities where seniors can thrive with dignity, independence, and purpose.

Seniors’ Week at Green Acres Foundation

Seniors’ Week is one of the biggest events of the year at Green Acres Foundation! We are proud to celebrate and appreciate our senior residents, who help make Green Acres a great place to live. The month of June is filled with activities that reflect the spirit of this celebration. Check out our event page for our community calendars and special events going on!

Some exciting highlights include:

  • Kick Off Events

Some of our communities are starting the week off with pancake breakfasts, BBQs and other activities.

  • Flamingo Bingo

Pemmican Lodge is hosting a bingo with a fun pink twist for all our residents!

  • BBQ and Soup Challenge

Blue Sky Lodge is hosting a friendly soup competition between all Green Acres Foundation communities. The winning soup will be featured on our Fall/Winter menu. Judges for the competition will include Mayor Blaine Hyggen, Deputy Fire Chief Wes Borland, and residents representing their senior community. Following the competition will be a BBQ and live musical entertainment!

  • Tandem E-Bike Rides

Celebrate Seniors’ Week with a spin around town on our new tandem e-bikes! Click here if you would like to volunteer to ride with our residents!

  • Activities with Partner Schools

There are many creative intergenerational activities on the calendars such as a Seniors’ Week Survivor Game, Balloon Battleship, Salsa Dancing, and a Teddy Bear Picnic.

Whether you’re a resident, a family member, or part of the larger community, we invite you to take part in this special week. Sign up to volunteer with our residents, share a memory, or simply take a moment to thank a senior who has made a difference in your life.
