The Silver Fox Walk 2026: Keeping Terry Fox’s Legacy Moving in Lethbridge

Terry’s own uncle led the way for our annual walk. Seeing him at the front of the pack served as a powerful reminder that Terry’s mission is not just history, it’s a living legacy carried forward by family and neighbours alike.

Let’s travel back to 1958 …

Terry Fox was born on July 28, 1958, in Winnipeg and raised in Port Coquitlam, British Colombia. At 18, he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, and in March 1977 his right leg was amputated above the knee. In April 1980, he began his Marathon of Hope in St. John’s Newfoundland, running roughly 5,373 km over 143 days and raised over $24.14 million for Cancer Research. His run may have ended near Thunder Bay Ontario, but his legacy continues in communities across Canada and around the world, raising over $1 billion through the annual Terry Fox Run.

September 2026

The torch of resilience is carried forward by local communities around the world. Our annual walk, on September 18, 2026, was a reminder that while Terry’s run ended, his mission continues through us, led by the inspiring presence of Terry’s own uncle and namesake.

Yes, they share the same name! That personal connection is the emotional core of this annual walk. He knew Terry Fox before the Marathon of Hope became a national story and he carries his family’s memory with him into our community every year.

Beyond the funds raised, this walk served as a beautiful bridge between the residents of our various senior communities. It was heartwarming to see neighbours and staff from across the foundation coming together. For many of our residents, this was not just a fundraising event, it was a moment that reminded us that we are all part of one supportive community.

And what about you? How do you carry forward your family’s or community’s legacy?
