Rewriting the Narrative on Mobility Aids
Aging changes our bodies, but it doesn’t have to hold us back. With the right support, we can open more doors than we close. In this article, we will explore the benefits and stigma around mobility aids and how we can reframe the narrative from viewing them as a problem to recognizing them as a solution. Just as we use glasses to see or hearing aids to hear - mobility aids are simply tools that support our movement and independence. By prioritizing safety over stigma, we not only reduce risk of falls, we give ourselves the freedom to move through life with confidence
If you have questions or concerns about your mobility, consider speaking with a medical professional who can guide you toward the support that’s right for you.
Mobility Aids
Even though most falls are preventable, they are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations among people 65 and older in Canada. (Read our Fall Prevention article to learn more about common causes for falls and how to avoid them.) In many cases, the risk of falling can be reduced by using mobility aids such as canes, walkers, and wheelchairs. Since 24% of Canadian seniors aged 65 and older struggle with mobility, these tools can offer many life-changing benefits.
Improves physical health – Walking aids can provide the confidence needed to stay active, supporting regular movement and preventing the effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
Improves mental health – Along with the mental health benefits of regular movement, mobility aids can help individuals regain independence and confidence. This reduced need for assistance makes daily activities more accessible and can significantly improve mood.
Provides Pain Relief – Mobility aids can lessen stress on the body and improve posture, and support muscle strength, often resulting in reduced pain.
Improves Safety – If used correctly, walking aids can help reduce fatigue, improve stability and significantly lower the risk of falls. (Check out our blog on Walker Safety tips here.)
Rewriting the Narrative
If mobility aids have so many benefits, why do some people still choose to go without them?
The stigma surrounding mobility aids often stems from deep-rooted fears and misconceptions about societal views and agism. Societal pressure and self-judgement can chip away at a person’s confidence, making it harder for individuals to choose tools that could enhance their safety, independence and quality of life. The emotional toll of stigma is not worth the risk of falling and harming health. It’s time to reframe the narrative of aging and needing tools to help.
Fear: I will lose my sense of autonomy and control.
Reality: Mobility aids empower me to move through daily activities with more confidence and with less fear of falling. They promote independence, not dependence.
Fear: People will think I’m weak.
Reality: Mobility aids are strength-based tools. They show that I am resilient and strong enough to keep doing the things I care about on my own terms. Choosing support is a sign of self-respect, not shame.
Fear: I’ll draw unwanted attention.
Reality: Confidence is what truly stands out. Using the support I need lets me move freely, and that freedom is more noticeable than the device itself.
Fear: Aids are a reminder that I am aging and experiencing physical changes.
Reality: Aging is a natural part of life and adapting is a form of wisdom. Mobility aids help me take control of my life, allowing me to participate in daily activities that matter most.
For loved ones, support can make all the difference. Encourage independence and be mindful not to “over-help” in ways that unintentionally weaken confidence. Supportive, stigma-free conversations can help someone feel seen, respected, and empowered to choose what’s best for their safety.
